Formed more than 7,700 years ago by the eruption of Mount Mazama, Wizard Island rises from the still waters of Crater Lake, the deepest lake in the United States. This stretch of the rim is my favorite place to experience sunrise, where the first light spills across the caldera and surrounding peaks. A short hike up Watchman Peak rewards you with sweeping panoramic views of Crater Lake and the Cascade Range beyond.
